About Earls Moving Company

It’s my name on the truck — so I make sure the move is done right. — Earl Caldwell, owner.

I’m Earl Caldwell, and Earls Moving Company is mine. I started it in 2010, I still answer the phone, and I still load trucks when we’re slammed. This is the company I built the way I always wished the ones I worked for had been run.

  • Licensed & insured — US DOT/MC & Alabama PSC household-goods authority
  • Set prices in writing, with nothing tucked out of sight
  • Our own uniformed crew, on our own trucks

I grew up on the east side of Birmingham, around Crestwood and Avondale, back when the neighborhood was a lot rougher than the brewery crowd makes it look now. After high school I went to work on local moving crews, and I did that for the better part of fifteen years — loading trucks in July heat, carrying couches up Highland Park staircases, learning every steep driveway off Red Mountain the hard way.

What I learned working for other people is that most of what goes wrong on a move is avoidable. The price changes at the end. A guy you’ve never seen shows up hungover. The truck’s too small. Nobody wrapped the dresser and now there’s a gouge in it. I got tired of apologizing to good people for other men’s shortcuts, so in 2010 I bought a truck, hired two movers I trusted, and started Earls Moving Company.

How we run it

The rules haven’t changed since that first truck. I hire and train every mover myself — they’re our own full-time W-2 employees in Earls shirts, not day labor and not subcontractors. I write a flat price down before we lift a box, and that’s the price you pay. The crew that loads you is the crew that unloads you. If something needs handling carefully — a piano, your grandmother’s china cabinet, a marble-top table — we slow down and do it right.

We’re a real licensed mover, not a broker or a matching service. We keep our US DOT and MC authority current for moves out of state and our Alabama PSC household-goods authority for moves inside Alabama, and we carry up to $1,000,000 in cargo coverage per shipment. You can look us up. I’d rather you did.

Why Birmingham

Because it’s home, and I know it. I know the Vulcan looks down on every job we run, that Railroad Park means the downtown lofts will have a loading-dock window, that the homes around Five Points South and UAB were built before anybody thought about getting a sectional up the stairs. That local knowledge is the whole point. A mover from out of town guesses. We’ve already moved your neighbor.

It’s a small company on purpose. I’d rather know every move on the calendar than be the biggest name in town. When you call (888) 711-4778, you’re calling my office — and a lot of the time, you’re calling me.

About the owner

Earl Caldwell — Owner of Earls Moving Company

Earl came up around Crestwood and Avondale and put in years on Birmingham moving crews before he started Earls Moving Company in 2010 with a single truck and one plain promise: quote a flat written price, pull up when we said we would, and handle your furniture the way we’d handle our own. He still runs the place, hires every mover himself and trains the crew in person — so the crew on your porch is ours, never a temp, never a job handed off.
