Local Moving in Birmingham

Our own Birmingham crew, our own trucks, and a flat written price before we lift a box.

When you hire Earls Moving Company for a move across town, you get Earl Caldwell’s own uniformed crew and one of our five trucks — the same movers load your house, ride with it, and set it back down on the other end. We have run local jobs out of Avondale since 2010, and most days you’ll still find Earl out on one of them.

Birmingham is a hilly old steel town, and moving here takes a crew that knows it. We work the craftsman streets of Highland Park, the condos in Five Points South and Lakeview, and the newer two-stories out past I-459 every week.

A local move with us is priced by the hour, with the pads, dollies, hand trucks, and basic tools already in the truck, with nothing tacked on at the curb. A two-mover crew with a truck runs $115 an hour; add a third mover for bigger or stair-heavy jobs and it’s $155 an hour. Before move day, our estimator Wade Ferguson walks the job (in person or by video) and hands you a flat written price, so the number you see is the number you pay.

What makes a Birmingham move tricky usually isn’t the distance — it’s the houses. The old homes in Forest Park and Crestwood sit on steep drives or no drive at all, with tight switchback stairs and narrow doorways built in the 1920s. Our crew leads, Dewayne Tucker and Travis Bonner, have been carrying sofas up those staircases for years and pad-wrap the tricky pieces before they ever leave a room.

What a local move costs in Birmingham

Most jobs land in one of these bands. The flat price depends on your home size, the stairs and access on both ends, and how much is going.

Home size Typical flat price
Studio / small apartment $300 – $480
1-bedroom $510 – $840
2-bedroom $880 – $1,420
3-bedroom home $1,500 – $2,300
4-bedroom house $2,100 – $3,200

A $89 deposit locks your date and comes straight off the total. Every shipment carries up to $1,000,000 in cargo coverage; standard released value is $0.60 per pound, with full-value protection available if you want it.

What the flat price does not cover

We keep it honest about the line items that aren’t baked into a standard local rate:

  • Packing materials and pack labor, which is our separate full-pack or partial-pack service.
  • Long carries or shuttle work when a truck can’t reach the door (common on the tightest Highland Park lots).
  • Specialty handling for a piano or gun safe, which starts at $319.
  • Storage between homes, if your dates don’t line up.

If any of those apply to you, Wade builds them into the written quote up front — no surprises after the truck is loaded. We move through hot, sticky Alabama summers and the rare January ice storm all the same, and we show up when we say we will.

What’s already in your price

Everything our Birmingham crew rolls up with on move day — nothing added later, nothing sprung on you.

  • Earl’s own uniformed, full-time W-2 crew and one of our five trucks
  • Furniture pads, dollies, hand trucks, and basic tools at no extra charge
  • Disassembly and reassembly of standard beds, tables, and furniture
  • A flat written price locked before move day after Wade’s walkthrough
  • Up to $1,000,000 cargo coverage per shipment, $0.60/lb released value standard
  • Careful pad-wrapping of fragile and high-value pieces on tight Birmingham stairs

The questions we get most

Do you handle the steep driveways and tight stairs in the old Highland Park and Crestwood homes?
Yes — those streets are our bread and butter. Our crew leads have worked the 1920s craftsman and Tudor homes around Highland Park, Forest Park, and Crestwood for years. We scope the access on both ends during the estimate and bring extra hands or a shuttle when the steep drives and narrow stairs call for it.
Is the hourly rate really all-in, or do extras get added at the curb?
All-in. The $115 hourly rate for a two-mover crew (or $155 for three) covers the truck, pads, dollies, and tools. Anything beyond a standard local move — packing materials, a piano, or storage — is written into your flat quote before move day, so nothing gets sprung on you when the truck shows up.
How far ahead should I book a Birmingham move?
Two to three weeks is comfortable, and end-of-month and summer weekends fill up fastest around here. A $89 deposit holds your date and is applied to your total. If you’re in a pinch, call us anyway — we run five trucks and can sometimes fit a short-notice job.
Will the same movers who pick up my house be the ones who deliver it?
Every time. Earls Moving Company runs its own trucks and its own employed crews, so the team that loads in Avondale or Southside is the same team that unloads at the new place. We don’t hand your move off to anybody else.
